Castelo de São Jorge Tickets

More than the gate. The castle's Included in Your Ticket page lists full access to the monument and its gardens without time constraints, at any time within opening hours, plus three things visitors routinely miss because nobody at the gate mentions them:

• The guided tour Discovering the Castle, up to one hour — and the archaeological site can only be visited on it
• The guided tour of the Camera Obscura in the Tower of Ulysses, up to 20 minutes — again, only on the tour, subject to weather
• Family activities on the last Sunday of the month from May to October
• The museum of finds from the alcáçova, the wall-walks and the eleven towers, the gardens and the viewpoint terrace

Spots on the guided tours may be limited, the page says, and the tour times are not printed online; ask at the ticket office when you arrive. The castle does not print a ticket validity beyond the day of purchase, and there is no re-entry rule stated either way.

The ticket office. Inside the gate on Rua de Santa Cruz do Castelo, on the left of the small square. It takes the discounted fares with proof and is where the tour times are posted. The queue here is the only queue the castle has, and it is the reason the reseller tickets exist.

BOL online. The castle states that BOL (Bilheteira Online, castelosaojorge.bol.pt) is its only authorised online sales platform, and that it declines responsibility for information or losses from any other platform. The BOL ticket is the same €17 and the same conditions; it saves the purchase, not the check at the gate. Buy it the day before if you know your date.

A reseller. GetYourGuide's two listings are operator products that include the castle entry. Only the guided skip-the-line ticket claims a fast lane, and its mechanism is a guide who meets you outside the ticket office by the big tree and takes the group through; the audio-guide e-ticket is a pre-bought entry plus an app. Neither is the castle's own ticket, and the castle says so; what you get in exchange is a calendar, a guide or an audio tour, and on one of them free cancellation.

Yes, for the adult card. The castle lists 'Lisboa Card – Adult' among the free entries, and the card's own inclusion list names São Jorge Castle. The card also covers bus 737 from Praça da Figueira to the gate and the tram 28 that stops below the walls, which is the transport most people use to get here anyway.

The sum: a 24-hour card is €31 (about $36). The castle alone is €17, so the card needs about €14 more of covered entries or transport in the same 24 hours to break even — the Sé at €7 with the card's own €5 rate, the National Pantheon at €10 and a day of Carris rides get there easily. Where it fails is a day spent mostly in Alfama on foot with one ticket. The Lisboa Card page has the full inclusion list and the Sintra exclusions.

Every reduced fare on the grid is conditional on a document shown at the entrance when the ticket is validated: ID for youth and senior fares, a professional card for culture professionals, the relevant certificate for specific needs. Buy a youth ticket online at €8.50 and arrive without ID and the castle's rule is that the discount is not honoured.

Under-12s are free with no ticket needed, and school groups with children up to 12 are free with a school document. There is no family ticket printed and no student discount above the youth ceiling of 25. The specific-needs fare of €12 includes a free companion.

What is not here is the residents' free Sunday. That is a rule of the state monuments body, Museus e Monumentos de Portugal, and it applies to Jerónimos and the Pantheon, not to this municipal castle; the castle's ticket page prints no free day for anyone, resident or visitor. Since 1 August 2024 there is no free Sunday for visitors from abroad at any Lisbon monument, so nothing is lost by coming on a weekday.

The official ticket wins when you arrive at 09:00, on a winter weekday, or on any rainy day: there is no queue to skip and €17 is the floor. It also wins for anyone with a reduced fare, because the reseller tickets are adult-priced.

The guided skip-the-line ticket wins for a summer visit between 11:00 and 16:00, when the gate queue is at its longest, and for anyone who wants a plan they can cancel: it reserves now, pays later, and cancels free to 24 hours before. The 15-minute introduction covers the Moorish period and the layout, then you are on your own for as long as you like. It is €16 (about $19) over the official fare, which is the price of not standing in the sun.

The audio-guide e-ticket wins only if you want a narrated route in one of its six languages and are certain of the date, because it is non-refundable and makes no queue claim. Its operator's 1–4 hour duration is the app's, not the castle's.

The Lisboa Card wins on a day that also takes in two or three other paid sites and the trains, and loses on a castle-plus-walking day.

The ticket is valid at any time within opening hours, but the castle inside the ticket shrinks in the evening. Summer (1 March to 31 October) gate 09:00–21:00, last admission 20:30; winter 09:00–18:00, last admission 17:30. The wall-walks and towers close at 17:30 in winter and at a daylight-dependent time between 18:00 and 21:00 in summer, and the guided tours run at times posted only at the ticket office.

A full-price ticket bought at 20:00 in July buys the terrace and gardens. The seasonal table and the quiet slots are on the São Jorge Castle page; closed days are 1 January, 1 May and 24, 25 and 31 December.

• Full value: inside by 17:00 any month, with the guided tour times checked at the office on arrival
• Reduced value: after the ramparts close — still a fine terrace at sunset, but not €17 of castle
• No value: the five closed days, and 31 December despite the tourist board's 13:00 listing

The sixth, smaller one: the audio-guide e-ticket is non-refundable, so do not buy it for a day that depends on the weather. The ramparts are the point, and they are miserable in rain.

• Buying a 'skip-the-line' ticket from a site that is not BOL and expecting the castle to honour it as its own — the castle's page disclaims every other platform; the GetYourGuide products work because an operator brings the entry, not because the castle sold it
• Buying a youth or senior fare online and arriving without ID — the discount is refused at validation
• Arriving at 19:30 in summer for the ramparts — they may already be closed by daylight, and the ticket is full price
• Assuming a residents' free Sunday — there is none printed here, and none for visitors anywhere in Lisbon since 1 August 2024
• Counting the Lisboa Card as a phone ticket — it is a physical card collected at an Ask Me Lisboa office, so a card bought online at the castle gate does not get you in

The castle is the expensive ticket of the walk; the rest of the hill is cheap or free. The Sé cathedral below it is €7 (about $8) for the whole tourist circuit, €5 with the Lisboa Card, and closed on Sundays. The National Pantheon along the ridge is €10 (about $12), closed Mondays, with its own terrace looking back at the castle.

The Santa Luzia and Portas do Sol viewpoints under the walls are free, and the Alfama page strings all of them together. The Lisbon attractions tickets index has every official price on one page.

Buy the ticket for the morning. The castle opens at 09:00 every day, the gate queue is at its shortest, and the rest of the hill — Alfama, the cathedral and the Pantheon — is downhill from the gate. On a Monday it is one of the few big tickets in the city that is open, so put it on the Monday and the state museums on another day; the Monday page lists who closes.
